Tests and Public Speaking Edinburgh Glasgow. Hypnotherapy, CBT, Counselling, CoachingTests, examinations, presentations, public speaking, court appearences, driving tests and related events often really scare people into a state of panic.
People tend to have a perceptual idea of negative judgement, conflict, condemnation, ridicule, failure or simple panic.
This is purely a concept, and is related to the defence mechanism of catatrophising. The poor victim of this comes up with the worst and most scary outcome, either conciously aware of it, or bublling under the surface, and this distracts them from the emotional state they need for the event.
Over time, poor performance because of excess nervousness worsens the problem, appearing to be confirmation of their fears!
It should be noted that some people also seek support because they are average at performances, and want to become better, not because of any actual panic.
Coaching and therapy
There are some very effective methods for tackling this sort of problem.
1. If there are underlying reasons such as traumas or phobias, some counselling or other therapy work may be needed to tackle the underlying cause and patterns.
2. CBT, and NLP are useful in changing the way we "feel" about the event, turning it into something we can actually look forward to and be positive about.
3. Hypnotherapy, NLP and other visualisation methods are good for changing behaviours as well as perception. Therefore rather than panicking when confronted with the situation, the client acts in a new confident way, with new positive behaviours and outcomes.
The typical combination is visualisation, CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and SIT (Stress innoculation therapy). In laymans terms this usually means Hypnotherapy, work on the way we perceive ("see") things so that they are no longer scary, and gradual desensitisation and new subsituted feelings.
Visualisation methods are a great way of practicing things safely without actually having to do them, and while retaining complete control over those images. This can be used to prepare people for actual events so that by the time of trying things for real, they feel confident and practised. This combined with step by step challenging are major parts of SIT (Stress innoculation therapy).
NLP (Neuro linguistic programming) can be used as part of the visualisation "toolbox" and can also be used to customise and choose new emotional responses. With practice new strong and positive emotions can be triggered in what used to be a scary situation.
Typical issues that are dealt with are court appearences, driving tests, examinations, public speeches, presentations, assessments, reviews, lectures, sports events and performances.
